[ABSTRACT]

Historically, "giftedness" is often seen as indicative of some mental quality that distinguishes a few from the rest of human beings. This alleged giftedness not only makes this small group homogeneous (the assumption of homogeneity), but also maintains its unity, identity, and continuity over time (the assumption of permanence). This view represents what I call essentialism (Dai, 2010, 2016, 2018). I see giftedness simply as human potential for excellence, which can be manifested in a variety of ways and at different levels. There is a myriad of excellence in various domains and contexts and at different developmental junctures (e.g., child prodigies, various talents, expertise, polymaths, creative performance and productivity). Instead of making the essentialist explanation of such a diverse array of human excellence, I see manifestations of giftedness and talent as forms of human potential for excellence that is dynamic rather static, contextually and developmentally shaped rather sitting idly in the head or body.

I. Historical Changes in Conceptions of Human Potential (HP)

Based on Dewey and Bentley (1949), I delineate the historical changes in conceptions of human potential as going through three phases. In the first phase, human potential is conce ptuali zed as some type of fixed capacity, only to be unleashed by the environmental forces (stimulation and opportunity). In the second phase, human potential takes the form of inclination, or disposition vis-a-vis particular situations. In other words, human potential is interactive, sensitive and relative to situations. In the third phase, human potential is transactional, seen as a property of person-environment functional relationship. Based on this transactional view, nature (genetics, anatomy, physiology, neural systems) can constrain nurture (how fast one can learn and how far one can go in achieving excellence; Howard, 2009; Hambrick et al, 2018); conversely, nurture (extend transactional experiences, delibrate practice, and extended problem solving) can change nature (anatomy, physiology, and neural systems, cognitive efficiency; Ceci & Liker, 1986; Schlaug, 2001).

Ⅱ. New Understanding of Human Potential for Excellence

A transactional view of human potential (HP) stresses the following points: HP is epigenetic (how genes express themselves is contingent on what kinds and degrees of environmental stimulation, opportunities, and experience one has), and thus is developmental in nature (Gottlieb, 1998); HP is increasingly domainspecific with transactional experience with domainspecific tasks; HP is experience-enhancing in terms of conceptual proficiency as well as neural and physiological efficiency; and finally, HP involves ind ividuality (i.e., a distinct, personal way of representing and acting upon the world) that is evolving and playing an increasingly important role on the road to excellence. A transactional view of human potential gives credence to evidence rather than assumptions, The evidence of potential can be observed through the rate of learning (individual differences in learning curve) in specific domains as well as the apparent plateau (asymptote) one has reached (Shiffrin, 1996). Preponderance of evidence points to what is typically called Matthew Effect (i.e., cumulated advantages over time; the term is originated from Bible, meaning metaphorically as well as literally that the rich get richer, the poor get poorer). Matthew Effect can be attributed to individual factors such as ease of learning, interest, and persistence. It can also be attributed to various social advantages and privileges that help the privileged get ahead more easily (Merton, 1996). Interested readers can refer to a new book Bob Sternberg and I edited on human potential (Dai & Sternberg, 2021). Here I use a study of mine to illustrate the point.

The data presented above come from a study of graduates of a prestigious early college entrance STEM program in China who went ahead to pursue advanced studies in the United States and later became young promising scientists and university professors. As shown in the Figure, a roughly four-year difference between this group and US national averages in terms of the age of entry to college converts to an eight-year difference in terms of the age of gaining professional recognition. Our study shows both individual and social factors jointly and interactively contributing to this accelerated STEM research career (Dai & Li, 2020). The complex interplay of individual and social advantages in producing Matthew Effect(i.e., the fan-spread effect) and the accelerated talent trajectory suggests that we should rethink how human potential is shaped in multiple ways. Two key principles can be derived from the epigenetic and contextual nature of gifted and talent development. The first is equifinality, which means that the same phenomenon or developmental outcome can have different origins and pathways. The second principle is the flip side of equifinality: multifinality, which means even the starting point is the same, there is no pre-ordained pathway, as life circumstances or small changes in life course can change one's life trajectory dramatically; high-level development is especially contingent on small or big life-changing chance encounters and life events. To use metaphors to describe these two principles, sometimes all roads lead to Rome, and sometimes twists and turns can lead you to Daegu, Seoul, or Shanghai (see Cicchetti & Rogosch, 1996 for elaboration of the two concepts in the context of developmental psychopathology).

III. Implications: Redefining Giftedness and Gifted Education

Gifted education has operated for a long time under the essentialist assumptions of homogeneity and permanence, what I call the Gifted Child Paradigm (Dai, 2011, Dai & Chen, 2013). Gifted education has also been somewhat insulated over time from the changes in society and general education. Moreover, when gifted education is operated in a top-down manner, as is the case in most countries (see Dai & Kuo, 2016), it tends to become part of the bureaucratic education system, rendering it less sensitive to the changing educational needs and more prone to losing its invigorating power. I am calling for a new era of gifted education that shift s its focus to talent development; namely, the Talent Development Paradigm is the future direction and norm of gifted education, because it is scientifically more compelling, socially more equitable, and educationally more productive (Dai, 2016, 2019). The main assumptions of talent development driving education innovations are the following:

 • Talent is diverse and widely distributed in a population

 • Talent is developmental in nature and can be cultivated

 • Talent for the 21st century can be quit e different from that for the 20th century

IV. Conclusionon

Gifted education has been undergoing a paradigm shift based on new understandings of human potential for excellence. Accommodating a variety of talent trajectories and pathways, rather than "serving the gifted", should be the main agenda for gifted and talented education.
